So now that it’s been a year and the next-generation consoles Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are firmly fixed as the current-generation with their blazing performance and unbelievable high-definition graphics. But what if we apply that power and HD graphics to our favorite games of yesterday? The answer to that question got me to thinking what games would I upgrade if I could only pick five? Here is my list of the Games that Need an HD Remake for Current Gen systems:
Red Dead Redemption
Red Dead Redemption a 2010 western action-adventure video game developed and published by Rockstar Games. This third-person shooter set in America’s Old West let’s gamers “of a certain age” relive their childhood fantasies about starring in their very own Spaghetti Western movie.
It’s kind of ironic that a game meant to look like an old-time movie should make my list of games to be upgraded to current-gen HD but with the increase in system performance comes bigger maps, faster gunfights and horse rides, more stuff to blow up, and just more, more MORE! On top of that, it will all look fantastic in high-definition resolution with added realism and detail that the current tech affords.
System Shock is a 1994 first-person action role-playing horror video game hybrid developed by Looking Glass Technologies and published by Origin Systems. The game is set in the year 2072 aboard a creepy space station in a cyberpunk-type universe. The player assumes the role of a hacker that is attempting to hinder the plans of a malevolent artificial intelligence called SHODAN.
This game was groundbreaking and innovative in many ways from its then awesome custom 3D engine and physics simulator to the complex gameplay and depth of story that it would end up being one of the major influences on the genre right up to the present. As we’ve seen with the recent trend in FPS survival horror hybrid games, they benefit tremendously from terrific graphics and better performing systems so if you’re looking to update one to the current-gen, why not go back to the game that was so fun, so creepy, and so influential on this type of game in the first place? Why not indeed!
Current graphics improvements like lighting effects, anti-aliasing, unbelievably detailed shaders, and that gorgeously huge HD resolution would all combine to make this one of the scariest, most detailed sci-fi shooters that the only thing more realistic would be to take on SHODAN in real-life. Gamers looking to do so should start by…<REDACTED. ACCOUNT TERMINATED. Thank you for using the Sentient Hyper-Optimized Data Access Network>
Half Life Series
Half-Life is a series of sci-fi first-person-shooter video games developed by Valve Corporation that all take place in the same science fiction-themed dystopian alternate reality. The canon titles in this series are some of the most critically acclaimed, influential, and damn near-perfect sci-fi FPS games ever made. Their incredible flowing storyline, then fantastic graphics, and realism are truly second to none making this entry the biggest no-brainer on my list.
It’s seems like we’ve been waiting forever for any positive word on the development of Half-Life 2: Episode Three and there doesn’t seem to be any light at the end of the tunnel for the foreseeable future making it likely the most infamous example of video game vaporware EVER. With THAT bad taste in our mouths, we turn our heads to the current selection of Half-life titles to choose one for the HD treatment but which one was more deserving than the others?
I thought about this for a long time and came to the conclusion that I couldn’t pick just one – they all deserve the treatment. They’re all THAT good. Anyone who doesn’t get chills down their spine thinking about any one of these titles decked out in modern graphics and high resolutions should stop reading now and immediately check in to City 17 and turn yourself over to the Combine for reprogramming.
Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic
KOTOR is a third-person role-playing video game developed in 2003 by BioWare and published by LucasArts. The game is set in the Star Wars universe approximately 4,000 years before the rise of the Galactic Empire. This was the first RPG set in the Star Wars universe and was released to much critical acclaim. Many consider it to be one of the best games ever made with its beautifully detailed story, depth of character development, hundreds of non-player characters to interact with each with excellent spoken dialog, then cutting edge graphics, and wonderful soundtrack.
The amount of bad Star Wars-based game titles unfortunately outnumbers the good and so it becomes that much more important to pick the best of the best for the HD upgrade treatment and by every sense and description of the word, Star Wars KOTOR delivers. The game environments, vehicles, characters, combat effects, and more were all considered beautiful and cutting edge back in the day so can you imagine how much better this game would be if these were all brought up to today’s technology? Major Star Wars fans are chomping at the bit for Star Wars Battlefront to be released in November but an announcement of an HD Remake of Star Wars KOTOR would be as exciting or more for diehard fans. The force is strong with this one!
Star Wars Republic Commando
Republic Commando is a 2005 tactical first-person shooter video game, set in the Star Wars universe developed and published by LucasArts. In the game, the player takes command of a Clone commando team, made up of elite Clone troopers and gets to experience tactical squad-based combat operations in various locales in the Star Wars universe, including Kashyyyk, Geonosis, and in close-quarters on various spacecraft.
Gameplay is intense and exciting with a variety of weapons and equipment to choose from and beautiful fully realized and varied environments thanks to the use of the Unreal Engine. Lack of Jedi, shallow tactical depth, and the overall short length of the game detract from the games awesomeness but it’s a flippin’ Star Wars FPS and incredibly fun to play so these shortcomings can be overlooked and the game is well deserving of an HD upgrade to current-gen hardware. With today’s lighting effects, shaders, physics, and real-time rendering at mind boggling resolutions, this game would be gorgeous as well as a blast to play! The circle is now complete.
